Baptism

St James was a fisherman - this is his ancient scallop shell

Another word for Baptism is Christening. Everyone is entitled to have their children baptised in church. If you live in another parish you will be asked to contact the parish priest of your local church.

If you live in the parish of St James', Sutton-on-Hull, please ring the church office and we will arrange for you to attend a Baptism Class and after that we will discuss a suitable time and date.

If you are not sure which parish you live in, please put your post-code in the box below.

We welcome baptisms at any service. However, due to large numbers of parents wishing to have their children baptised, we usually baptise at 12 - noon on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, and also the 5th Sunday when there is one.

(These times replace those left here in error from the

previous ministry).

Parents and godparents should already be baptised themselves. If they are not, we would be happy to talk with you about baptising you.

You will be making promises in the service on behalf of your child, that you will bring your child up as a Christian, and we promise that we will make her/him welcome as part of the church.

There is no charge for baptism; but we ask you to give a donation to the church appropriate to the importance of the occasion.

Below is part of the baptism service and the promises you will be making on behalf of your child.

The minister says to the whole congregation

Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome these children and uphold them in their new life in Christ?

The congregation responds. With the help of God, we will.

The minister says to the parents and godparents

Parents and godparents, the Church receives these children with joy.  In baptism they begin their journey in faith. You speak for them today.  Will you care for them, will you pray for them, will you walk with them in the way of Christ, and help them to take their place within the life and worship of Christ's Church?

Parents and godparents respond. With the help of God, we will.

The minister says to the parents and godparents

In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask:

Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?

Parents and godparents respond. I reject them.

Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil?

Parents and godparents respond. I reject them.

Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour?

Parents and godparents respond. I reject them.

Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?

Parents and godparents respond. I turn to Christ.

Do you submit to Christ as Lord?

Parents and godparents respond. I turn to Christ.

Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life?

Parents and godparents respond. I turn to Christ.

The minister makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of each candidate, saying, Christ claims you for his own.  Receive the sign of his cross.  Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified. Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life.

May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ. Amen.
